The hosts were level within six minutes as Vincent Kompany rose highest to head home from a corner and Alvaro Negredo sealed the win in first half stoppage time.

Picked out by Jesus Navas defence splitting pass, the Spaniard saw his lofted effort helped into the back of the net by Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mingolet, who made a mess of his attempt to stop the shot.

Both sides had chances to add to their tally, with a Navas header clipping the woodwork, whilst Joe Hart made crucial interventions to deny Coutinho and Jordan Henderson.

Sterling had a goal ruled out for offside and blazed over from a promising position as his future employers claimed a vital victory against a side they would pip to the title by two points the following May.
