The two teams had played out a 1-1 draw at the City of Manchester Stadium, as it was then known, in the first leg and our hopes of reaching the fifth round were dealt a serious blow in a nightmare first half.
Spurs took the lead in the second minute when Ledley King curled a superb effort into the top corner, and Robbie Keane double their advantage when he collected Stephen Carr’s long ball and poked beyond goalkeeper Arni Arason.
Christian Ziege ensured the hosts went in three goals to the good with brilliant 25-yard free-kick and City’s first half misery was compounded when Joey Barton picked up a second yellow card for dissent whilst leaving the field at the break.
The 10-men pulled one back within three minutes of the restart, as Sylvain Distin headed home from Michael Tarnat’s free-kick before Paul Bosvelt’s deflected effort dragged City back into the game.
Shaun Wright-Phillips chipped Kasey Keller to complete the unlikeliest of comebacks and substitute Jon Macken headed a 90th minute winner to complete a victory that barely felt possible 45 minutes earlier.
